About EXOPULSE

What is EXOPULSE?

EXOPULSE is a suit consisting of a pair of trousers, a jacket and a detachable control unit. The EXOPULSE garments includes 58 imbedded electrodes, positioned to stimulate 40 key muscles in the body. Through a low frequency electro-stimulation, EXOPULSE relaxes spastic, tense and aching muscles safely and simply. Programmed after each person’s needs, EXOPULSE prevents and counteracts different forms of muscle shortening and rigidity, and helps the user regain control over muscle tension. In addition, through electro-stimulation settings, Mollii can facilitate the activation of muscles, and thereby may facilitate muscle contractions.

Who uses EXOPULSE?

EXOPULSE is used by people with spasticity, tense muscles and associated pain, which is typically found in people with cerebral palsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, acquired brain injuries and other neurological disorders. It is also used in conjunction with fibromyalgia and other syndroms involving muscle pain. EXOPULSE is available for both children and adults, from 104 cm up to XXXL men and women sizes. The suit is simple to use in both a home and clinic environment. Users dress-up with a EXOPULSE the same way they would with an ordinary garment. There is a button for on/off and a button for play/pause. A simple push of the button starts the stimulation, which proceeds automatically for 60 minutes, and has a lasting positive effect for up to 48 hours.

How does it work?

EXOPULSE is used to stimulate the antagonistic muscle to a muscle that is spastic. If for example, the biceps muscle is spastic, the suit is used to stimulate the triceps muscle. By a natural reflex mechanism called reciprocal inhibition, the biceps muscle will subsequently relax. Relaxing the muscle enables active movements and a gradual improvement in function.

Moreover, EXOPULSE facilitates the sub-threshold stimulation by preparing the muscle for contraction, thereby reducing the nerve signal-strength required by the user to actually generate a muscle contraction.

EXOPULSE also reduces associated pain, possibly through the gate control theory of pain, which asserts that non-painful input such as the electric stimulation of cutaneous nerves prevents pain sensation from traveling to the brain. Moreover, the suit's unique ability to generate multi-stimulation to the central nervous system, combined with the low frequency used, may also inhibit pain by activating opioid receptors in the spinal cord and the brainstem. Spinal serotonin levels can also be increased during and immediately after using electro-stimulation.

It is a safe and simple assistive device that can increase quality of life, reduce muscle pain and help recover motor functions faster. The device should be used for one hour every second day, and preferably together with physiotherapy, training, activity or movement. The effects are individual and can last for up to 48 hours and possibly longer.

Frequently asked questions

1Who is EXOPULSE for?
EXOPULSE is an assistive device for people with muscle pain, spasticity and other forms of motor impairment due to CP, MS, stroke, other brain injuries, and fibromyalgia or other syndromes involving muscle pain.
2How does the EXOPULSE suit work?
EXOPULSE is a functional garment that consists of a pair of trousers, a jacket and a detachable control unit which sends electrical signals to the user via electrodes on the inside of the garment. The suit has 58 electrodes which can be combined in various ways. EXOPULSE has a control unit which is individually programmed for each user. The person prescribing EXOPULSE uses a computer program to adapt the active electrodes and the intensity (which muscles are to be activated by means of current). The settings are then saved in the EXOPULSE control unit, making it simple for the device to be used at home.
3What happens in the body when EXOPULSE is used?
EXOPULSE uses low level electric current to produce basic tension in the musculature. The current stimulates the antagonist to the spastic muscle. If, for example, the biceps is spastic, the triceps is stimulated which in turn makes the biceps relax. Relaxing the muscle enables active movement and a gradual improvement in function. The physiological mechanism is called reciprocal inhibition.
4What sizes are available for the EXOPULSE suit?
Available in 25 sizes for children from size CL 104 to ladies and mens sizes. Children (CL): 104, 110, 116, 122, 128, 134, 140, 146, 152 Ladies: XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL Mens: XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL Unisex: Short XL
5Is the EXOPULSE suit user-friendly?
EXOPULSE is a functional assistive device that is designed to be used in the home environment. It is simple to use. If a person can put on an ordinary garment him/herself, then he/she can put EXIPULSE on him/herself. There is a button for on/off and a button for play/ pause. A single push of the button starts muscle stimulation, which proceeds automatically for 60 minutes. The device is used for one hour every second day.
6How often should the EXOPULSE suit be used?
The device should be used for one hour every second day, and preferably together with physiotherapy, training, activity or movement. The effects are individual and can last for up to 48 hours and possibly longer.
7EXOPULSE suit safety
EXOPULSE is not to be used with electrical implanted devices or medical devices that are affected by magnets, such as shunts. Consult a doctor in the event of: epilepsy, bone fracture, malignancy (cancer), infectious disease, fever, pregnancy, rashes, skin problems, cardiovascular disease or other types of related conditions; and if EXOPULSE is used with other medical devices suhc as cochlear implants.
